Nestled in the Elk Mountains near Aspen, Maroon Bells is one of Colorado’s most iconic destinations. Whether you’re heading there for the red-rock reflections or scenic hikes, here’s everything you need to know for an unforgettable visit. (Information current as of February 2025. Maroon Bells Access & Reservations
- Shuttle or vehicle reservation is mandatory from May 15 to October 31, 2025. You must choose between a trailhead parking permit ($10/vehicle) or an RFTA shuttle reservation (round trip $16 adults, $10 kids/seniors).
- RFTA shuttle runs from May 23 to October 19, 7 AM–3 PM with the last return bus around 5 PM.
- Drop-offs are allowed before 8 AM and after 5 PM but require a one-way shuttle ticket back.
- No food or water is available in the Scenic Area—fill up before the ride. Restrooms are limited at the trailhead.

What to Do at Maroon Bells
- Take the 1.7-mile nature loop around Maroon Lake or hike to Crater Lake (3.6 miles round-trip; moderately strenuous—plan ~3 hours).
- The area also serves as a trailhead for longer adventures like the Four Pass Loop or Crested Butte trail, as well as overnight destinations like Conundrum Hot Springs—with permits.
- Bring bear-proof canisters if backpacking and follow Leave No Trace—human-waste bags (WAG bags) are required in some zones.
Road Trip Stop: Smoke Modern Barbeque — Glenwood Springs
On your drive back, take a different route through Glenwood Springs. While there, enjoy a stop at Smoke Modern Barbeque—a contemporary BBQ joint known for its generous portions and elevated southern-inspired flavors. Expect tender brisket, hefty pulled pork sandwiches, and a comfortable atmosphere.
